Jellylearn invited to speak at the International Road Safety Forum in Bologna

On the 9th October, our Director, Michael Bennett, was asked to speak about the implications of the new EU Directive regarding Hazard Perception. This meeting, organised by the European Driving Schools Association (EFA), was attended by the European Transport Safety Council, EU Parliament members, UNECE stakeholders, and road safety academics and professionals. Hazard Perception has been consistently associated as one of the few cognitive driving skills found to reduce traffic accidents, particularly among learner drivers. Its inclusion in the new Directive is the result of the dedication of EFA and Jellylearn, working together with ETSC. The highlights of the new Directive recommend the following for all EU member states:-

Learner Drivers
Inclusion of hazard perception in the Theory Test Part.

Minimum Requirement for Driving Test
Driving risk factors related to various road conditions, including perception and anticipation of hazards, in particular as they change with the weather and the time of day or night.
General perception, including hazard perception, judgement and decision-taking, especially reaction time, as well as changes in driving behaviour due to the influence of alcohol, drugs and medicinal products, state of mind and fatigue;
Hazard perception and accident avoidance; this includes understanding and paying attention to the vulnerability of non-motorised road users and motorised vehicle users.

Knowledge, Skill and Behaviour for a Powered Vehicle
Recognise and anticipate traffic dangers and hazards, and assess their seriousness.

Competence required by a Driving Examiner
Minimum standards for access to the profession of examiner and examiner training requirements should be established to improve examiners' knowledge and skills, including hazard perception testing, thereby ensuring a more objective evaluation of driving licence applicants and achieving greater harmonisation of driving tests.

All of the above require knowledge of how to create high-quality, evidence-based hazard perception content that embeds an understanding of this key driving skill across all road environments and weather conditions. If you need help with adding this to your Theory Test, please get in contact using the form on the website
